Data science is definitely one of the most sought after skill sets in the United States right now! We have facilitated great placement outcomes through our departmental career services. We saw an opportunity to provide additional support to our students because of the specific nature of their work. It is also important to understand how widespread this skill set is because of the interdisciplinary nature.
Resources
CDS collaborates with the NYU Wasserman for Center Career Development to make sure that we are providing a wider range of opportunities to CDS students. We engage with both the NYU Entrepreneurial Institute (Leslie eLab) and NYU Accelerators and Incubators. Overall, connecting data science students to various resources allows them to have a full breadth of support and a better understanding of how to navigate NYU.
We developed an internal recruitment, placement, and networking initiative. This initiative includes company information sessions, career fairs, networking happy hours, amongst other types of events connecting students with employers.
The five types of events are listed with their descriptions below:

CDS organizes internal Company Information Sessions during the Fall and Spring semesters. This is an opportunity for a single company to visit the Center for Data Science (CDS) to gain exposure and speak to CDS students in-person. The purpose of this event is for the company to explain who they are and what they do. They can talk about the company’s data science initiatives and goals and maybe include some interesting projects they are working on. It is also an opportunity to communicate about what it is like to work at that company by discussing company culture and a “day in the life” as a Data Scientist at the organization.
This event is for companies that have full-time jobs or internship opportunities available under the data science umbrella. They are similar to job fairs, but much smaller. We have about 8-10 companies that are currently recruiting, to come to CDS and have one-on-one conversations with our students. Students have a chance to hear about a company, its data science initiatives, and job openings
Companies provide us with a dataset and a challenge that lasts up to 6 hours. The students go off into groups and then come back to present their results. The company sends Data Scientists and Engineers to judge the groups and the team wins based on a criteria provided to them before the challenge. The students get to showcase their talent, interact with the company data, and have an opportunity to connect with employers in a non traditional way.
Employers volunteer to do resume reviews, mock interview workshops, and office hours for CDS students. This gives them an industry perspective, all while allowing them to interact with the employer in a more useful context.
