With our MS Open House for prospective students coming up on December 14, one might be wondering: where exactly could this degree take you?
During our exciting Alumni Student Networking event on November 4, our alumni gathered with current CDS students to share how they found success in several industries like finance, media, and technology after graduating.
For example, Grant Long (’15) currently works in the digital division of Capital One, a leading banking corporation, where he uses data science to analyze customers’ spending habits so that they can improve their services.
On the other hand, Tom Secru (’15) is conducting deep-learning research to advance speech recognition at tech-giant IBM-Watson. Applying data science analytics to news publishing, Jing Ping (’16) worked at AOL and is now a part of the Huffington Post Media Group, where she records and predicts trending news topics and crafts data-driven aggregators.
Although many of our alumni came to CDS’ MSDS program from different backgrounds, they explained how the degree helped them to consolidate their interests, improve their team working abilities, and deepen the technical knowledge that they acquired during their undergraduate studies. Key to their on-going success after graduation was the program’s great mix of classes and its collaborative culture; Secru in particular was fortunate enough to work on a rigorous research project that is directly related to the work he is now performing for IBM.
Given our program’s interdisciplinary focus, it is both delightful and unsurprising to hear about how our alumni have applied their skills to so many different roles. The possibilities appear to be endless, and we cannot wait to where our next graduating class goes after tossing their graduation caps in the air this winter!
