Earlier this month, the Center for Data Science welcomed Ebay to come and talk with our students about some real world applications for a Master of Data Science curriculum. As one of the world’s largest customer to customer and business to customer e-commerce websites, Ebay uses a recommendation system that pulls from all of their users’ inventories. In order to do this effectively, data scientists are employed to ensure that Ebay’s customer experience is controlled and standardized. One of the team members, Ben, discussed how he is currently using deep learning tools to group similar products together based on product images. Like any ecommerce company, Ebay is constantly searching for the optimal balance of how many products to recommend to their customers. Team members Harry and Savesh each respectively discussed how similar products are recommended, and when to start giving new product recommendations.
After the presentation, students got to talk with the individual members from eBay and discuss the projects they found interesting. The team announced opportunities for data scientists at eBay’s New York office and discussed internships and full-time opportunities with CDS students.
