Professor of Data Science and Mathematics - Statistics

The Center for Data Science (CDS) and the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences seeks candidates for an open rank joint faculty position, anticipated to begin in in September 2019. Appointments may be made at either a junior or senior level.

Description:

The Center for Data Science (CDS) and the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences seek candidates for an open rank joint faculty position, anticipated to begin September 2019. Appointments may be made at either a junior or senior level.

CDS is the focal point for NYU’s university-wide initiative in data science and statistics, established 5 years ago, and one of the country’s leading data science research and training facilities. CDS is a vibrant space with about 15 jointly appointed faculty (growing to over 20 in the next two years) and about 10 associated faculty across computer science, mathematics, engineering, neuroscience, linguistics, politics, psychology, physics, biology and business; a list of affiliate faculty spanning a wide range of NYU’s schools and departments, a highly successful Master’s program and one of the first Data Science PhD programs. CDS’s research focuses on tools and methods at the intersection between applied mathematics, data science, high-dimensional statistics, machine learning, optimization, and several data-driven application areas. The Courant Institute houses one of the top applied mathematics departments in the world.  CDS and the Math department both host vibrant interdisciplinary PhD programs and several faculty at NYU are already jointly appointed at both the Center for Data Science and Courant. We seek to develop our strengths in statistics, leveraging the connections to data science. We are particularly focused on expanding in the area of Applied and Theoretical Statistics as well as interdisciplinary areas where the innovative and principled use of statistics is of vital importance. Exceptional candidates from other data-science relevant areas, such as optimization and the mathematical foundations of inference and data-representation will be considered as well.

Requirements & Application:

A PhD in Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field is required.

Assistant Professor of Economics and Data Science
 Junior Tenure Track Position

Description:

The Department of Economics in the Faculty of Arts and Science and the NYU Center for Data Science (CDS) invite applications for one junior tenure track position (“Assistant Professor of Economics and Data Science”) to begin September 1, 2019, subject to administrative and budgetary approval.

This position is a joint appointment between the Department of Economics and the Center for Data Science, distinct from other junior tenure track positions at the Department of Economics. The successful candidate will be a faculty member in both units, with teaching, service, and other professional duties split between them.

Candidates must have outstanding research records, including a proven research record in data science with applications to economics. Examples of data science research areas could include inter alia supervised and unsupervised learning, “big data”, natural language processing, computer vision, neural networks and non-convex optimization. Responsibilities of the position include instruction of undergraduate and/or graduate courses within the Department of Economics and Center for Data Science.

Joint Faculty Position at the Center for Neural Science and Center for Data Science

Description:

The Center for Data Science(CDS) and the Center for Neural Science (CNS) invite applications for an open rank joint faculty position, anticipated to begin September 2019. Appointments may be made at either junior or senior level. We seek exceptional candidates that can carry out research programs aimed at quantitative analysis and modeling of neural data, and developing related data science tools and methods, leveraging existing strengths of CNS and CDS. We are particularly interested in scholars with cross-disciplinary research interests that complement those of our existing faculty. The successful candidate will be a faculty member in both units, with teaching, service, and other professional duties split between them.

Requirements & Application:

Appointees are expected to be outstanding research scholars, and to contribute to teaching and advising of students at all levels both at CNS and CDS. Candidates should have completed a PhD or equivalent in a relevant field.
