How do I declare Data Science as a major?
Students who wish to declare as a DS major will need to submit the DS Major Declaration form during the designated declaration periods which traditionally take place during the last two weeks of September in the fall semester and from mid-February to mid-March in the spring semester.
Is there a minimum requirement that must be met in order to declare as a DS major?
In order to declare the major you will need to have completed at least one DS-UA course with a grade of “C” or better.
Can students from other schools within NYU declare as a DS major?
Students from other schools can major in DS as a secondary major, along with their primary major as long as their home school allows it.
HOW DO I DECLARE THE JOINT MAJOR IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AND DATA SCIENCE?
Students who wish to declare the Joint Major in Computer Science and Data Science will need to submit the Joint Computer Science and Data Science Major form during the designated declaration periods which traditionally take place in the last two weeks of September during the fall semester and from mid-February to mid-March in the spring semester.
IS THERE A MINIMUM REQUIREMENT THAT MUST BE MET IN ORDER TO DECLARE THE JOINT MAJOR IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AND DATA SCIENCE?
In order to declare you will need to have completed at least one DS-UA course and CSCI-UA 101 Introduction to Computer Science both with a grade of “C” or better.
CAN STUDENTS FROM OTHER SCHOOLS WITHIN NYU DECLARE THE JOINT MAJOR IN COMPUTER SCIENCE AND DATA SCIENCE?
Students from other schools can declare the joint major as a secondary major, along with their primary major as long as their home school allows it.
How do I declare Data Science as a minor?
Students who wish to declare as a DS minor will need to submit the DS Minor Declaration form during the designated declaration period during the designated declaration periods which traditionally take place in the last two weeks of September during the fall semester and from mid-February to mid-March in the spring semester.
Is there a minimum requirement that must be met in order to declare as a DS minor?
In order to declare you will need to have completed at least one DS-UA course with a grade of “C” or better.
Can students from other schools within NYU declare as a DS minor?
The DS minor has been registered as a cross-school minor, so any NYU student without access to the minor at their home school can minor in the CAS DS minor.
IS IT POSSIBLE FOR DATA SCIENCE STUDENTS TO DOUBLE-COUNT COURSES FOR OTHER MAJORS/MINORS?
Students who have declared a DS major are allowed to double count up to two courses with another major. Those with DS minors are allowed to double count one course with another minor.
CAN DS MAJORS TAKE/TRANSFER COURSES AT ANOTHER NYU SCHOOL?
DS majors can take up to 16-credits of external NYU (non-CAS) courses.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO WAIVE A REQUIRED MAJOR/MINOR COURSE?
All students must complete a minimum of 64 credits at CAS. Students are able to substitute a requirement with another course with approval from the Director of Undergraduate Studies. For approval, email cds-undergraduate@nyu.edu. Students will be required to make up these credits via elective.
WHAT IS THE TRANSFER CREDIT APPROVAL PROCESS FOR MAJOR REQUIREMENTS?
NYU Admissions will review your credit transfer request first. They will send the courses approved for NYU transfer to CDS, at which point we will conduct an internal review to see if any courses are applicable to the major/minor.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO AUDIT DS COURSES?
No.
