Below you will find a list of frequently asked questions:
HOW DO I DECLARE THE DATA SCIENCE MAJOR, MINOR OR ONE OF THE JOINT MAJORS?
For the data science major, minor, and joint data science and mathematics major, students may declare during the declaration periods in the fall and spring semesters and the summer sessions. During the fall semester, the declaration period is the month of October; during the spring semester, the declaration period is mid-February to mid-March; and in the summer, the declaration period is mid-June to mid-July. For the joint computer science and data science major, students may declare anytime throughout the academic year. Please write to cds-undergraduate@nyu.edu to request the declaration form during the proper timeframes.
IS THERE A MINIMUM REQUIREMENT THAT MUST BE MET IN ORDER TO DECLARE AS A DATA SCIENCE MAJOR, MINOR OR ONE OF THE JOINT MAJORS?
In order to declare the data science major, joint major in data science and mathematics or the data science minor you will need to have completed at least one DS-UA course with a grade of “C” or better. To declare the joint major in computer science and data science you will need to have completed at least one DS-UA course and CSCI-UA 101 both with a grade of “C” or better.
CAN STUDENTS FROM OTHER SCHOOLS WITHIN NYU DECLARE AS A DATA SCIENCE MAJOR, MINOR OR ONE OF THE JOINT MAJORS?
Students from other schools can major or minor in data science, or one of the joint majors, along with their primary major as long as their home school allows it.
IS IT POSSIBLE FOR DATA SCIENCE STUDENTS TO DOUBLE-COUNT COURSES FOR OTHER MAJORS/MINORS?
Students who have declared a data science major are allowed to double count up to two courses with another major. Those with data science minors are allowed to double count one course with another minor.
CAN DATA SCIENCE MAJORS TAKE/TRANSFER COURSES AT ANOTHER NYU SCHOOL?
Data science majors can take up to 16-credits of external NYU (non-CAS) courses.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO WAIVE A REQUIRED MAJOR/MINOR COURSE?
In some cases students can waive a requirement. However, they will still be required to make up the waived credits via elective.
WHAT IS THE TRANSFER CREDIT APPROVAL PROCESS FOR MAJOR REQUIREMENTS?
NYU Admissions will review your credit transfer request first. They will send the courses approved for NYU transfer to CDS, at which point we will conduct an internal review to see if any courses are applicable to the major/minor.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO AUDIT DATA SCIENCE COURSES?
No.
