Overview
The NYU Center for Data Science’s (CDS) Undergraduate Research Initiative aims to introduce undergraduate students to research opportunities across NYU and beyond. Launched in spring 2022, this initiative serves as a roadmap for students looking to engage in meaningful research experiences.
CDS undergraduate students are among the most promising data scientists in the country. Through this initiative, CDS connects its students with the wider university community and various research opportunities while providing researchers around campus with highly skilled students for data science projects in their fields.
The Undergraduate Research Initiative is designed to:
- Help students learn how to effectively conduct research
- Connect students with labs and faculty looking for undergraduate research assistance
- Provide educational events and resources on research methodologies and careers
- Expose students to diverse research opportunities both within and outside NYU
For more information about this initiative, please contact our Assistant Director of Undergraduate Programs, Tim Baker. Research 101
As part of the initiative, CDS hosts “Research 101” panels featuring CDS faculty. These events cover:
- Steps students can take to pursue a career in research
- Advice from faculty on research careers
- Q&A sessions with experienced researchers
Recent panels have included CDS Associate Professor of Data Science, Kyunghyun Cho, who emphasizes the importance of experiencing data-driven approaches to problem-solving.
Informational Sessions
The Undergraduate Research Initiative hosts informational sessions with both internal and external organizations to expose students to a wide range of research resources and opportunities. Recent sessions have included researchers from:
- Columbia University
- Mailman School of Public Health
- NYU Courant Institute of Mathematics
- NYU’s Furman Center
- Labs from NYU Langone
