Student Research Initiatives Overview

About

The NYU Center for Data Science (CDS) is committed to fostering a rich research environment for students at all levels. Our Student Research Initiatives provide diverse opportunities for undergraduates and graduate students to engage in cutting-edge data science research, both within CDS and across NYU’s broader academic community.

Programs

CURP (CDS Undergraduate Research Program)

CURP offers undergraduate students the chance to work on assigned research projects under the supervision of CDS faculty and researchers.

The program aims to:

  • Connect students with top-notch data science faculty and researchers
  • Provide a rigorous research environment embracing diverse perspectives
  • Develop skills needed for research careers in data science
  • Prepare students for graduate program admissions and fellowship applications

CURP is open to all students but especially encourages applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds.

Undergraduate Research Initiative (URI)

Launched in spring 2022, URI serves as a roadmap for undergraduate students looking to engage in meaningful data science research experiences.

The initiative:

  • Helps students learn effective research conduct
  • Connects students with labs and faculty seeking research assistance
  • Provides educational events and resources on research methodologies and careers
  • Exposes students to diverse research opportunities within and outside NYU

Summer Research Initiative for Master’s Students

Part of the Data Science and Software Services (DS3) initiative, this program introduces MS in Data Science students to research projects across NYU.

Key features include:

  • Connecting CDS MS students with the wider university research community
  • A spring research project fair for students to meet researchers and discuss open projects
  • Opportunities for students to apply their advanced skills in probability, statistics, machine learning, big data, and inference

Why Participate?

Engaging in research through these initiatives offers numerous benefits:

  1. Hands-on Experience: Apply classroom knowledge to real-world research problems
  2. Mentorship: Work closely with experienced faculty and researchers
  3. Skill Development: Enhance critical thinking, problem-solving, and technical skills
  4. Network Building: Connect with peers, faculty, and professionals in the field
  5. Career Preparation: Gain valuable experience for future academic or industry pursuits
  6. Contribution to Knowledge: Play a role in advancing the field of data science

How to Get Involved

Each program has its own application process and timeline. We encourage students to:

  1. Review the detailed information on each program’s page
  2. Attend informational sessions and research fairs
  3. Reach out to program contacts with specific questions
  4. Prepare application materials well in advance of deadlines
