Faculty Positions
As a part of its Artificial Intelligence Initiative, New York University invites candidates to apply for tenure-track positions in AI. The search is conducted jointly by the NYU Courant Computer Science department, the NYU Center for Data Science, the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, and the NYU Tandon Electrical and Computer Engineering; the faculty appointments can be in any of the four units, or joint.
We are looking for strong candidates working in a broad set of areas of AI, including, but not limited to, machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, AI for health. Competitive salaries and startup packages will be offered. New appointees are expected to be outstanding scholars and to participate in teaching at all levels from undergraduate to doctoral. The NYU Center for Data Science (CDS) seeks to fill (2) Clinical Faculty positions in Data Science at its Washington Square campus.
CDS is the focal point for NYU’s university-wide initiative in data science and statistics, established 9 years ago, and one of the country’s leading data science research and training facilities. CDS is a vibrant space with 21 jointly appointed faculty and 10 associated faculty across computer science, mathematics, engineering, neuroscience, linguistics, politics, psychology, physics, biology and business; a list of affiliate faculty spanning a wide range of NYU’s schools and departments, a highly successful Master’s program and one of the first Data Science PhD programs as well as the new undergraduate program in data science. CDS’ research focuses on tools and methods at the intersection between applied mathematics, data science, high-dimensional statistics, machine learning, optimization, and several data-driven application areas.
The primary responsibilities will be:
- Teaching and coordinating three (3) entry- and advanced-level courses for undergraduates- and masters-level students in Data Science during each of the Fall and Spring semesters. Topics of courses might include some subset of: probability and statistics, statistical modeling, causal inference, machine learning, computer vision, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, “big data”, visualization, programming for data science.
- Training and evaluating teaching assistants
- Other responsibilities related to the administration of the undergraduate and graduate programs including but not limited to: helping with the administration of admissions to the MSDS, designing and revising curricula when required, advising students on optimal course choices and sequences. These other responsibilities may lead to a reduction in course load.
This Clinical Faculty position is not a tenured or tenured-track position. Data Science full-time clinical faculty hold renewable term contracts, initially for one year, and later three to five years in duration. Clinical faculty are eligible for promotion within the Clinical faculty ranks (Assistant, Associate, Full).
Qualifications
Applicants must have a strong background in Data Science and a Ph.D. in a related field, as well as experience in and knowledge about undergraduate and graduate teaching, learning, and curricular issues.

The Center for Data Science (CDS) and the Department of Mathematics within the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences seeks candidates for one (1) open-rank joint faculty position, anticipated to begin in September 2023. Faculty members are expected to be outstanding scholars and to participate in teaching at all levels from undergraduate to doctoral.
We seek to develop our strength at the interface between machine learning and science, leveraging advances in data science. Machine learning has the possibility of transforming our ability to model multi-scale physics, chemistry and biology. We are particularly focused on expanding in the area of data science for physics applications (e.g., fluid dynamics, climate science) and computational applied sciences with machine learning. Exceptional candidates from other data-science relevant areas will be considered as well. Successful candidates could potentially hold cross appointments with physics.
This search is part of a cluster hire in Predicting Climate Change and its Impacts: From the Global to Urban Scale that includes the departments of Mathematics and Computer Science in the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Civil and Urban Engineering in the Tandon School of Engineering, and the Center for Data Science. Advances in climate science prediction will require transformative developments in and between mathematics, data science, computer science, physics, engineering and geoscience. The position is for one (1) semester in Spring 2023 to teach DS-GA 1019 Advanced Python for Data Science from January 23, 2023 through May 17, 2023.

- Course description: In this course, we will examine a range of advanced techniques for improving the performance of Python programs, including the use of parallel computation and GPU acceleration. We will also investigate how Python can be used for big data analysis using frameworks such as Apache Hadoop and Apache Spark. Students will have the opportunity to employ these techniques and gain hands-on experience developing advanced Python applications. The course will take a student-centered, active learning, approach to teaching this material. Class will typically consist of a short introduction to programming techniques, followed by hands-on computing exercises.

Position Summary
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Programs, the Program Administrator will oversee the operation of the Center for Data Science’s undergraduate programs. The Program Administrator will be providing academic advising to data science undergraduate majors and minors as well as prospective majors, be responsible for overseeing the undergraduate community-building activities and organizations, and be actively engaged in planning and executing undergraduate career and professional development programs. In addition, the Program Administrator will support the Assistant Director with undergraduate program course scheduling, course registration, and graduation clearances. The Program Administrator will also be expected to interpret university policies and procedures, implement and monitor departmental compliance with those policies and procedures, and initiate programs and services in response to CDS and student needs. In conjunction with the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Programs, the Program Administrator will maintain undergraduate webpages, undergraduate program records and data, and undergraduate academic and student affairs communications.
