Our Programs

Master’s Program in Data Science

Our highly selective Master of Science in Data Science program is designed for students with a strong foundation in mathematics, computer science, and applied statistics. This rigorous 36-credit program can be completed in 2 years of full-time study and offers:

  • Industry Concentration
  • Data Science Track with areas of interest in Big Data, Mathematics and Data, and Natural Language Processing
  • Biomedical Informatics Track

How to Apply

To apply for the MS in Data Science program, please follow these steps:

  1. Visit the GSAS Application Resource Center for detailed information on the application process.
  2. Prepare the following required materials:
    1. Academic Transcripts
    2. TOEFL scores (if required)
    3. GRE Scores (Optional)
    4. Applicant Statements
    5. Résumé or Curriculum Vitae
    6. Letters of Recommendation
    7. Application fee (non-refundable)
  3. Start your application at the GSAS Online Application Portal.

Application Deadline: January 22 for Fall admission

Competitive tuition scholarships are available for selected students.

Educational Prerequisites:

  • Calculus I
  • Linear Algebra
  • Intro to Computer Science
  • One of: Calculus II, Probability, Statistics, or an advanced physics, engineering, or econometrics course with heavy mathematical content

PhD Program in Data Science

Launched in Fall 2017, our pioneering PhD in Data Science program is recognized as one of the top doctoral programs globally. We aim to foster rigorously trained, cross-disciplinary, and ethically responsible data scientists who can:

  • Develop methodologies and use statistical tools for cross-disciplinary questions
  • Communicate effectively to extract precise questions from complex data
  • Translate research insights into practical applications
  • Understand the ethical implications of their work

Financial support, including tuition and a competitive stipend, is guaranteed for up to five years for successful candidates.

How to Apply

  • The application process for the PhD program is similar to that of the MS program. Please follow the steps outlined in the MS section above.
  • Application Deadline: December 5 for Fall admission
  • Special Instructions: The PhD program offers opportunities to conduct research in New York or at NYU Shanghai. Indicate your interest in the campus section of the application.

Non-Degree Program

Our Non-Degree program is perfect for professionals looking to develop their data science skills without committing to a full degree program. This flexible option allows you to:

  • Enroll in courses and receive credit as a non-degree student
  • Expand your professional abilities
  • Facilitate a career change

How to Apply

  1. Visit the GSAS non-degree application site for detailed information.
  2. Prepare the following materials:
    1. Official academic transcript showing bachelor’s degree conferral
    2. TOEFL scores (if required)
    3. Letters of recommendation
    4. Résumé
    5. Statement of academic purpose explaining your non-degree study plans
  3. U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or H1-B visa holders should use the online application. Other applicants must follow special instructions provided by Graduate Enrollment Services.

August 1 for Fall admission / November 1 for Spring admission
