Below you will find a list of frequently asked questions about CDS’ undergraduate program in data science:

Is there a minimum requirement to declare a data science major, minor or one of the joint majors?

For the data science Major, Minor, and Joint Major in Data science and Mathematics students must complete DS-UA 111 Principles of Data Science I with a C or better.

For the Joint Major in Computer Science and Data Science students must complete DS-UA 111 Principles of Data Science I and CSCI-UA 101 or CSCI-UA 102 (depending on placement) both with a grade of C or better.

How do I declare the data science major, minor or one of the joint majors?

Upon the successful completion of the required courses (see above question) students may declare the data science major, minor, or one of the joint majors. You can find the declaration forms below:

Can students from other schools within NYU declare as a data science major, minor or one of the joint majors?

Yes, as long as their home school allows it.

Is it possible for data science students to double-count courses for other majors/minors?

– Data science majors: Yes, up to two courses with another major.
– Data science minors: Yes, one course with another minor.

Can data science majors take/transfer courses at another NYU school?

Yes, up to 16-credits of external NYU (non-CAS) courses.

Is it possible to waive a required major/minor course?

In some cases, yes. However, waived credits must be made up via electives.

What is the transfer credit approval process for major requirements?

NYU Admissions reviews credit transfer requests first. Approved courses are then sent to CDS for internal review to determine applicability to the major/minor.

Is it possible to audit data science courses?
